CHARACTER
NAME: Neptune Vasilias
CANON: RWBY
CANON POINT: Vol. 6 Episode 1
AGE: 19
BACKGROUND: "Alright, girls, try and remember: hands above the waist."

PERSONALITY: First and foremost, Neptune is a shameless flirt— to the point where it almost seems like he can’t help himself. Immediately upon meeting the members of Team RWBY, he uses the very same pickup line on Weiss that Jaune had attempted during their first meeting, though he doesn’t always find himself met with as much success as he was in that particular instance. His attempts at flirtation with the members of Team NDGO, for example, are met with unimpressed glares, which probably wasn’t helped by his use of fingerguns. Though his interactions with the opposite sex seem to be a mixed bag, he does have his fans, as evidenced by the Team SSSN posters held up by fangirls at the Vytal Tournament, and Jaune’s concern over whether or not Neptune actually cares about the girls he hits on implies that at least some of them respond positively enough that Neptune could potentially lead them on if he isn’t careful.

In addition, Neptune puts a great deal of effort into presenting himself as being “cool,” and to a certain extent, he’s successful. Both Sun and Jaune refer to him as such, and he often manages to maintain a calm and collected demeanor, with a few notable exceptions. He admits that he tries “really, really hard,” and it’s clear that the way other people view him is important to him. While he isn’t particularly vain, he is definitely self-conscious when it comes to things such as fashion, his appearance, and how he is generally perceived. He’s quick to intervene when Sun mentions wearing normal clothes to the upcoming dance, horrified that his friend would even consider such a thing, and even his day-to-day clothing has formal leanings. How other people see him is so important that he goes so far as to turn down Weiss’ invitation to that same dance, despite the fact that he actively likes her, simply because he doesn’t want anyone to know he can’t dance. Rather than admit to his faults, he would rather save face, although the fact that it hurt Weiss’ feelings was enough for Jaune to convince him to reconsider, and he decides to be honest and be himself with Weiss rather than worry about whether or not he’ll embarrass himself. Despite being concerned with his reputation, he doesn’t like the idea of someone else having to be hurt in order for him to keep up appearances. These same concerns may lend themselves to some perfectionist tendencies, such as the meticulous way he dresses as well as a general unwillingness to allow himself to be seen as anything less than what he thinks he should be.

Similarly, Neptune has difficulty admitting to and facing his fears. While he was able to move past the fact that he can’t dance and get over himself, he has yet to be able to conquer his severe aquaphobia. Despite the fact that his friends are aware of it (and given his manic behavior when faced with water, it would be impossible for them not to be), Neptune remains in denial and will insist on not knowing what they’re talking about even as he runs in the opposite direction. He has a couple of recurring nervous tics, the most noticeable of which is the fact that he’ll give a pained smile and go stiff as a board when anxious, particularly around pretty girls that make him exceptionally nervous, but he also freezes up like this when the ocean portion of the arena is revealed prior to Team SSSN’s fight against Team NDGO. Less noticeably, he’ll shed his usually confident stance to rub at the back of his neck and stare down at his feet when he’s talking about something that he feels self-conscious about, but generally not in public.

Neptune is a sharp student, and argues that he’s an “intellectual” when Sun accuses him of being a nerd. He has respect for rules and guidelines, shown when he and Ren agree on the fact that libraries are for reading rather than board games. He has a good head for strategy, which we see when he sits down to play a game of World of Remnant with the girls of Team RWBY, and is later said to have swept the floor with them. This also translates to the battlefield, where combat situations often require on-the-fly strategic thinking— he and his partner, Sun, fight well alongside one another and have no trouble reading each other in the midst of combat, and Neptune seems to be reasonably in-sync with his other teammates, as well. As a future huntsman, he doesn’t shy away from combat, and he’s quick to jump in and lend his aid when he feels that his friends need it, as seen when he and Sun assist Team RWBY at the end of Volume 2 as well as his participation in the Battle of Beacon.

Although it can be assumed that Neptune is close with each of the members of his team, Sun Wukong is easily his best friend, and the two of them are often seen in one another’s company, barring Sun’s occasionally going rogue to head out on his own for awhile. It’s not often that we see Neptune without Sun, and they complement one another well as both partners and friends. Neptune is calm and level-headed where Sun is excitable, and Sun is an anchor for Neptune whenever he does panic and needs to be reeled back in. It’s mentioned that Neptune is also particularly friendly with Scarlet David, in that Neptune himself is apparently bad at keeping secrets and often gossips with Scarlet when he thinks Sun isn’t paying attention. Regardless, Sun confides in him anyway, sharing sensitive information regarding Blake’s being a faunus, which implies that when it really matters, Neptune is trustworthy and can be depended on.

POWERS/ABILITIES: As a former student of Haven Academy and member of Team SSSN, Neptune is proficient in combat, as is to be expected of a huntsman-in-training. His weapon, Tri-Hard, allows him to move seamlessly between ranged and melee combat, depending on its current form. Though it’s compact while in transit, he often uses it at range in the form of an energy gun, which is able to fire bolts of electricity at his opponents. It can also transform to become a guandao with an energy-infused blade, which can split further to become a trident. In combat, he is shown to be nimble with sharp reflexes, as well as creative with the use of his weapon, such as lowering his blade into a body of water in order to electrocute his opponents rather than striking directly.

Aura: In the world of Remnant, Aura, or the manifestation of one’s soul, can be used in a number of ways that vary from person to person. It can be generated and used by anyone with a soul, depending on factors including innate ability and training. It can be used as a form of defense or as a barrier, but when overused or depleted, the user is often weakened and vulnerable, or even incapacitated. It can recharge over time, and takes on the color of a person’s inner energy.

Semblance: Neptune's Semblance has not been shown in canon, nor has it been confirmed that he has actively awakened to it yet. Considering his status as a student at Haven and his apparent level of combat experience, it could be assumed that he has already awakened to his Semblance, like most other students, and simply doesn’t rely on it. However, with no canon confirmation or evidence, his Semblance will not come into play, other than the general assumption that he has one, as other characters in the series do.

INVENTORY: Tri-Hard and his digital scroll.

MOONBLESSING: Cordis.
